‍Project Profile:

‍What is the problem or opportunity you are addressing in this project?

The Early Childhood profession is a person centered profession which requires a high level of competent communication skills both written and verbal. It is vital our learners have the opprtunity to practice these skills throughout their course. Our learners develop their skills in Early Childhood Practice much faster and with greater competence when using a teaching model that encompasses collegial and teacher/learner communication.
The delivery of the Diploma of Children's Services on-line has been using chat sessions to facilitate communication. This has worked to a degree but oral communication and video have not been able to be used due to lack of broadband connectivity and slow uploads and downloads. Chat sessions often 'dropout' due to slow connectivity speeds and students have been reporting frustration with the technology.

The opportunity this project presents is that NBN will allow us to use Adobe connect and SkypeTM to facilitate this higher level of communication. Students will be able to feel confident their learning can be facilitated through the NBN network without the frustrations of slow speed, dropping out and poor quality.

‍Who are the learners and how will they benefit from this project?

The learners are a group of existing workers from the Armidale area enrolled in the Diploma of Children's Services 2012. The teacher will be from Illawarra Institute of TAFE working from Kiama library. The learners will be in their homes or at Armidale TAFE. Using the power of broadband the learners will connect with a teacher across the state (Armidale to Kiama) to complete two learning outcomes from one unit of competency in the Diploma of Children's Services. Through the use of NBN, communication between teacher and learners; and between learner and learner will be enhanced, improving level of student learning quality and improving completion rates. Adobe Connect will benefit the learners through being able to speak and write to each other and SkypeTM will benefit individual learners as they connect with their teachers when they need 1:1 assistance. This will provide an environment where learners are able to communicate more comfortably and have a greater opportunity to interact via distance education. A positive experience will benefit the on-line learning method as learners will report satisfaction to people who are thinking about undertaking study on-line.

‍How are you currently delivering this training? (ie prior to the project)

We have the unit of competency developed as an on-line teacher faciliated model. Students work through a number of readings and resources as well as a number of interactive activities. Twice a week, students are invited to a chat session with their teachers. Students also communicate with their teachers via email and telephone as well as through forums and instant messaging on the VLE.
The VLE we use is the MOODLE.

How will your project demonstrate the power of broadband to enhance outcomes for learners?

At present, we deliver the Diploma of Children's Services online to a cohort of students across the Illawarra (from Bega to Helensburgh, Cooma and Yass) Students have a variety of internet providers, some have ADSL, some dial up. Some internet connections are slow , others very fast.
This project aims to get some baseline data on internet connection between ADSL sites, ADSL and NBN enabled sites; and NBN and NBN sites using Adobe connect meeting rooms. We hypothesise that the NBN to NBN enabled sites will allow us to stream videos, you tube, use webcams and voice with high quality through Adobe connect meeting rooms.
We will test a video compressed to both a high quality output and low quality output on in the Adobe meeting room with students to test the power of NBN
Adobe connect meeting room will give us a recording of the session and participants will be able to take a poll on their satisfaction with the quality of the videos, webcam, voice and you tube.

Project Update
January 2012
Initial Strategy Meeting Held - December.Discussion about the best unit for delivery, changes to the project as a result of the Induction day and feedback about project. Decided on use of Skype and Adobe connect instead of new video streaming technology. Adobe connect meets the AQTF requirements as discussion can be recorded and kept as evidence. This is useful evidence for the NBN project also. Meeting to ensure all parties involved will be available January 2012Second Meeting held 25th January between project MA managers and faculty directors. We have now included Adobe connect training, and 2 trials between Project Managers and Faculty Directors using the NBN in Kiama. Budget information required. Kiama library have been asked to provide the teacher NBN access. We will need to ensure the teacher has a TAFE computer for this to facilitate the use of Adobe connect.Further investigation into the use of SkypeTM and ElluminateTM programs on TAFE computers will be carried out.
Have discovered that TAFE does not support Skype. Believe Adobe connect alone will adequately support the project.

See recording of Adobe connect trial 2 at
https://webconf.det.nsw.edu.au/p7b0mhb5vor/
Results: Didn't appear to be a lot of difference between speeds from my personal home internet at Figtree ADSL or from TAFE Shellharbour.
Issues with sound and video clarity for the user at Wollongong.
Issues with Adobe connect and the files it can use. Emailed e-Hubs for assistance. They were very helpful. We need to learn a little more about the capacity of adobe connect yet!! Apparently we cant broadcast 'screen sharing' in Adobe Connect. Screen sharing shares the screen not the computer sound. We need to get the .flv file and upload that into the share pod. MOV and WMV cannot be uploaded into sharepod.
13th March 2012
Tele conference and adobe connect session with Tracey Dooner (HT Armidale Child and Family Studies) to disuss students, starting dates, getting started workshop and delivery model.
Issue: The students who were going to be involved in the trial are flexible delivery students who live all over the New England area. Most do not have NBN enabled broadband. This means we would have to ask the students to come into UNE as a group in order to complete the unit of competency. Tracey said the students have a workshop on 5th May and we could teach them this day. However, only having one lesson with the students does not allow us to test the power of NBN broadband over a period of time. Nor does it allow the students to feel comforatble with the technologies provided.
Outcome: After much discussion, the following was decided and noted:
  • We will go with the class based (internal) student cohort instead of the flexible delivery cohort for the unit delivery.
  • There are 8 students at Armidale who are enrolled in the Diploma Children's Services. They attend Wednesday and Thursday and have a study group (non compulsory) on Tuesday.
  • They are not enrolled in the Behaviour unit this semester so we will have to change the unit we are delivering
  • We will change the unit to CHCFC506A Foster Children's Language and Communication Development
  • Need to ask for this unit to be cloned and named NBN_Project_2012 CHCFC506A Foster Children's Language and Communication Development
  • Language unit needs to be cloned and set up with NVELS logo and a clink to Adobe connect room Need another viseo (high and low quality) for set up.
  • Tracey asked to talk to the teacher currently working with the students
  • A survey will be sent to her as well.
  • Tracey asked to talk to the students in Armidale about the project. Will do this 9:00 14th March
  • Tracey will ask these students for their email addresses so we can set them up on MOODLE.
  • We will then ask students to complete basline survey.
  • Classes will be held on Wednesday afternoon
  • May need to change teachers. Marian (original teacher) may not be available on a Wednesday.
  • We will have a Getting Started workshop on 4th April before the school holidays
  • We will start teaching on 2nd May and teach for 4 weeks
  • Send a flyer for Tracey Dooner to pass on to her students

21st March
9:30 am: Telephone discussion with Tracey Dooner from Armidale. Tracey and her team have secured the TAFE library for the students to work from. She will investigate the use of headphones and webcams.
Students did not get the survey sent to them last week. I sent them the survey again. have asked them to get their TAFE username and password. Investigating that there are no problems logging into the Moodle outside of the Institute. Preliminary findings are that there should be no problem. Teachers have been enrolled already. Students will be enrolled next week.
Concern that Kiama council will be unable to provide the venue as the rooms are fully booked. I rang Megan at the Pavillion at Kiama and she was very happy to book us in for the following dates:
The dates we are looking at are:
Wednesday 2nd May 9:15-10:45 am
Wednesday 9th May 9:15-10:45 am
Wednesday 16th May 9:15-10:45 am
Wednesday 23rd May 9:15-10:45 am
A ‘Getting Started workshop” for 26th April from 2:15 – 3:45 pm has also been booked. This is where we make sure the students are comfortable, can get onto the online learning tool, understand our sessions, expectations.
22nd March
Jo Fuller came and delivered training to us on the setting up of Adobe connect. This was a much needed session where the intricacies of Adobe connect and the many uses were discussed and demonstrated. troubleshooting was shown and confidence levels rose. It will be interesting to see how much faster adobe connect runs with NBN. Jo stated that the webcam for participants always needs to be turned off when using ADSL broadband, so it will be great to see what NBN can do.
Marian emailed to say she was testing the links and the Moodle platform. She said it took her 5 minutes to open and adobe presenter in the Moodle being delivered. This will also be an interesting test when we deliver with NBN to see if this presenter opens with more speed.
Need to ask students to develop something in their playsession involving setting up of the playsession. Something large that they can upload so we can test the upload speed more easily. (eg photographs)
29th March: Emailed the Pavilion at Kiama to check the bookings. They said there had been a mistake with the bookings and the 9th and the 23rd were now unavailable. Rang the Kiama library and the ahve agreed to allow us to use their reference room.
Set up the groups for Armidale students. Passwords seem to be working well.
Meeting with Justine Poidevin to go over the final details before the meeting with Lye tomorrow afternoon
30th March 2pm-4pm: Meeting with Lye Goh and Adam West re the project and its outcomes
2nd April Call from Melanie Dorian re ABC SE interview
Getting started flyer sent to students

April 2012
Have organised all teams to be ready for a getting started workshop on 26th April. All seems set to go
25th April
A glitch with the systems in Armidale. Seems the following was to have occurred
in order to make this work, we may need to install a little widget on the computers in question to facilitate the switching of machines from the internal network to the NBN. If so, we will provide instruction on how this is to be used. However, we will also install rules that restrict access to certain computers and certain users during certain hours. That way we can know with a high degree of certainty who is making use of this service and when.
Unfortunately this request has turned out to be much more complex than first thought. We will have to re-evaluate our design for the solution so that you will be able to simulate using the NBN internet connection. Essentially the complexity arises because both the PCs and the moodle/adobe connect servers are already on the internal network. We will need to isolate those particular pcs from the network at those times when you are delivering the training.
We won’t be able to meet the deadline for the training this Thursday (26th).
As far as the training on Thursday goes, there should be no problems with using the computers in the library to access the training over the internal network.
Don Tainsh
This will be Ok as we can use the 26th Getting started as a baseline trial. see what DSL speed and connectivity is and compared it next week when NBN is on the Armidale computers. We will still be using NBN enabled computers.
26th April: First getting stated workshop. This workshop designed to get students familiar with the adobe connect software, what can be done with it, how we can communicate with it
recording here: Taken from Kiama Pavillion
https://webconf.det.nsw.edu.au/p9j4lgp7g72/
Unfortunately forgot to take speed tests.
Some issues with technology. Cables on our machine not working and we needed more cables to run the NBN connection. Made us late to start up. This was noted in student and teacher feedback. We tried to make the experience as engaging as we could without thinking it may confuse newcomers to the technology. We needed to step the technology through to the teachers and students and we didnt do this a swell as we could have.
Important to make users feel at ease and understand the technology.
Decided for 2nd May we would have students go into adobe using a link within Moodle.Emailed students and teachers the new plan
May 2012
30th April: Invoice from Kiama pavillion for hiring of rooms.
1st May: emailed Tracey Dooner and asked her to purchased some webcams as the computers do not have these. Hopefully she will have these by next week.

Some students had some difficulty with this
Kryztal-lee Kermode: mines being slow and still loading
One student, Ranee, could not get onto the speedtest. She sounded a little frustrated
Spent some time after the trial talking to Marian, the teacher about methods of delivery. A lot of learning about facilitating online was done by Marian, Justine and I.
I sent the speedtest results to Don Tainsh at Armidale ICT. I was concerned about the slow speeds. He said we were not using NBN as there was still a glitch in the system.
Our students were not on the NBN network during today’s lesson. There have been numerous technical hurdles involved with taking internal client PCs, routing to NBN and then back into the DET network to internal learning resources.
Don said they were working hard to rectify the issues for which we are appreciative.
Don also said the speedtests were not useful today as they were not indicative of teh connection speed to adobe meeting room, rather they tested the internal DET network. I'm not sure what this means and will follow up asasp.
9/5/2012 - Delivery from Kiama Library this week. Students in Armidale have got access to webcams this week and 8 students are live streaming to our teacher in Kiama.
First speed test results of the morning were very good (92.99kbs for download speed) has been our best result so far.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1940003280.png
Below is a screen shot of the session. 8 webcams were runing simultaneously. The only webcam that froze was our own teachers'. It was a major boost to the program to see the students and they could see each other. Confidence levels are rising as you can see from the chat pod in the sessions. Audio in Liama was an issue today. It seemed there were some ICT issues. Also, when the computers are close together, there is some feedback. This is to do with technical issues and software not NBN.

16th May: Kiama pavillion
Hard to access NBN broadband. Kept dropping out
John Holland from council came over to assist. He said there wasa group downloading aerial photographs. The Pavillion only has one port so when high usage is occurring from another user, this affects the speed and reliability. He changed us from public to private because the public access only accesses half the available broadband to stop the public downloading too much.
The Kiama library has 4 ports which is why results were so good last time
The students had a lot of trouble with audio so there will need to be some follow on with IT in Armidale. I would like someone to be there next Wednesday to ensure the microphones all work for the students I rand Don Tainsh and am hoping he can do this.

Spoke to the manager IT in Armidale (Don Tainsh) regarding this mornings training. He explained the following
In the beginning he requested NBN access and the assumption was that itwould be for the internet. He later realised the resources we are using (Moodle and Adobe Connect) are internal DET and the Armidale TAFE compueters were set up to use the internal DET. IT had to break these computeres from the internal DET and put them into a separate area for use. This was a lot of effort and took 2 weeks to complete
However:
Todays training was NBN. He said it came out of Armidale NBN, down to the Sydney internet, through the DET firewall and eventaually reached the adobe connect software in Kiama.
Don suspected some of this mornings issues were related to the Adobe connect traffic traversing Adobe connect.
Adobe connect:
Was designed at a time when there was no high level broadband connection. There were heavy compromisers and optimisers in the design to make it work with low bandwidth like dial up. This affects the capacity of Adobe to function with the high speed broadband.
With the audio issues, Adobe is not supportive of people calling out. If more than one person is talking, the most recent speakers audio wins the battle. If everyone has a mike open, there is no capacity to talk. He guessed that the background noise was a result of adobes inability to cope with noise from another computer. ie speakers of one computer going into the microphone of another computer. Feedback would also be an issue.
Todays speedtest from Armidale was OK The ISP is not DET so it was definitely working through NBN
speed_test.jpg
The earlier speedtests came through DET
speedtest_early_DET.jpg
17/5 Received some feedback regarding the trial. from the teacher involved in Armidale. We have taken the feedback on board. We realise we have not given enough clear direction on the use of the Moodle in conjunction with the adobe connect session. This will need to be rectified for next week so a happier experience can take place.
Some positive feedback from Marian the teacher from Illawarra can be found here.
